Why speech perception in noise declines with aging remains under substantial debate. One hypothesis is that older adults adapt to perceptually-difficult listening conditions to a lesser extent than younger adults, and this, in turn, contributes to their difficulties. To test this hypothesis, we are conducting an ongoing study on the association between speech perception and perceptual learning. Friends, Colleagues, Students, and Alumni, The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CS&D) is going strong, with student clinicians being trained in both the MS SLP and AuD programs, pre-professional training at the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate level, and doctoral-level training in the classrooms and labs of our world-class research program.

Top experts participate in our projects, activities, and studies to examine and assemble evidence-based findings to address some of society's greatest challenges. The objective of the study was to examine the relations between two auditory processes, dichotic listening and speech perception in noise.
Both involve listening to competing signals and significantly decline with age. Dichotic listening and speech identification in multitalker noise were tested in 36 elderly participants with symmetric mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Maya L.
